Start with an assessment
Children should have their first orthodontic consultation by the age of seven. An early check helps identify tooth problems, assess jaw growth and establish whether there is enough space for adult teeth.
In some situations early orthodontic care can reduce the severity of developing problems, correct an existing issue or simplify future treatment. This is known as interceptive or Phase 1 orthodontic treatment.

Having braces fitted is not painful. Some discomfort is normal during the adjustment period, but it is usually mild and temporary. We will explain what to expect and how to keep your child comfortable.
Our team gives personalised instructions on caring for teeth and appliances. Your child will learn the correct brushing technique and will need to spend a little more time cleaning around brackets, wires or aligners.
In an emergency we will see your child as soon as possible. Patient care is very important to us, and we are always available to give advice and resolve appliance problems efficiently.
Orthodontic treatment should not usually disrupt daily life. Depending on the appliance, speech may be affected for a few days, food choices may need to change and teeth may need cleaning more frequently.
Yes. Regular dental and hygienist appointments remain important throughout orthodontic treatment.
Once treatment is agreed, our team will explain payment options. After a deposit, the balance can be spread over twelve months interest-free by direct debit or standing order. Finance options are also available on request.
Before age ten
Most children do not need orthodontic treatment at this age, but there are situations where early care is recommended. Phase 1 orthodontics can prevent more serious problems developing as a child grows, which is why certain problems should be addressed promptly.
For younger children, braces or aligners may be used for a limited period. They can be combined with appliances such as expanders to enhance the effect and shorten the overall treatment. We continue regular review appointments while waiting for all permanent teeth to erupt.
Examples include thumb or finger sucking beyond age four, protrusive teeth, early or late loss of baby teeth, crowded teeth, crossbites and underbites.
From age ten
Once permanent teeth have erupted, we evaluate the need for comprehensive orthodontic treatment. This is classed as Phase 2 treatment for a child who had Phase 1 care between ages six and nine, but it can also be provided as standalone treatment from age ten.
Invisalign or Spark aligners, clear braces and metal braces can finalise the alignment of the teeth and bite. Where fixed braces are selected, brackets are placed on all teeth and treatment follows a similar process to adult orthodontics.
Appliance options
These appliances correct jaw-growth and alignment problems by working on the upper and lower teeth at the same time. They may be fixed or removable. Twin Block and Herbst appliances guide the jaws to develop in a better position.
Rapid maxillary expansion widens the upper jaw to correct crossbites and create room for crowded teeth. Childhood is ideal because facial structures are still developing. Our 3D-printed metal expanders avoid a separate appointment for separators, while the Invisalign Palatal Expander uses a series of comfortable removable trays.
Removable appliances can correct simpler dental problems, especially while baby teeth remain. Every appliance is made and adjusted for the child’s individual needs. Children can choose colours and designs to make their orthodontic journey more comfortable and personal.
Retainers hold teeth in place after braces are removed. They may be fixed behind the front teeth or removable and worn full-time or at night. The design and wear time are personalised to the complexity and type of treatment completed.

Treatment fees depend on complexity. Fees include materials, laboratory costs, appointments, one set of removable retainers and one year of follow-up after brace removal. Finance options are available.
